A popular tv ad states “If it’s important it is not worth compromising.”
I would agree with that statement.
I think we can all agree that your vision would qualify as being very important.
What about your eye surgeon’s experience? Is that important?
When it comes to refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, SMILE, CONTOURA), can technology make up for a surgeon’s inexperience?
It is the surgeon’s responsibility to determine if a patient is an appropriate candidate and for which surgery. The surgeon uses very sophisticated diagnostic technology and needs to understand and have extensive experience with that diagnostic technology in order to make an appropriate decision on candidacy as well as to know what other treatments might better serve the patient. If the surgeon performs a wrong surgery on a patient, it could lead to permanent vision loss.
At Davis Vision Center we have experienced surgeons including Dr. Brian Davis who has personally performed over 40,000 procedures and is currently the most experienced Lasik surgeon in Utah. We also utilize the latest Lasik and diagnostic equipment including wavefront guided Lasik, laser flap creation, advanced corneal topography and tomography, retinal and anterior segment OCT, OCTA, and optical biometry.
One of the biggest variables in the outcome of the surgery is how the patient will heal. Each eye heals differently. Some of that variability can be associated with genetics and other variables that the surgeon and patient don’t have significant control over. I use the analogy of buying a new car. When you drive it off the new car lot it is just beautiful. However, the car can be hailed on, snowed on, and baked in the sun which alters its appearance. Similarly, healing alters the outcome of your surgery. Being under the care of an experienced surgeon who understands different healing patterns can be a huge advantage.
Current technology cannot make up for surgeon inexperience. Technology cannot examine the eye to evaluate healing nor determine candidacy for a particular procedure.
Let’s talk about technology.
KLex (Keratorefractive Lenticule Extraction) procedures like SMILE, SILK, CLEAR etc. allow an extraction of a piece of cornea to correct your prescription but have not been shown to significantly improve outcomes over wavefront guided LASIK. In fact many believe that Wavefront guided LASIK is more precise. KLex procedures are also more limited on the types of prescriptions they can treat. Topography driven procedure like Contoura maybe more beneficial in the rare case of a highly irregular cornea such as person with prior corneal injuries but in most cases a wavefront guided Lasik will be more personalized to the irregularities of the entire eye.
Your eye surgeon also needs to have understanding, expertise, and experience in the surgical technique in order to perform and apply the technology in the most appropriate and precise manner during your surgery. If not the outcome can be less than optimal.
We at Davis Vision Center offer advanced wavefront guided LASIK and highly experienced Lasik surgeons. This provides a very powerful combination for your amazing and important outcome.
