Halloween & Costume Contact Safety

We get it. Colored contact lenses can really turn your costume into something amazing!

Having orange contacts for you werewolf outfit or red or black ones make you look like a zombie.

Before you pop that contact lens in your eye, take a moment to think about what you are doing. Contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the FDA . If they are poorly made or don’t fit your eyes they can cause scratches and serious damage to your eyes. One size does not fit all any more than one size pants fit all. This is why they should be fit by an Eyecare professional. Any contact lens sold without a prescription or fitting is illegal. These illegal contacts can be infected with bacteria even in their packaging. In fact, an FDAs analysis of 300 illegally sold on-line lenses showed 60% to contain bacteria (See article “Colored Contact and Halloween Safety” on American Academy of Ophthalmology website http://www.aao.org/eye-health/halloween-cosplay-colorful-contacts-eye-safety ).

There have been individuals who have had serious eye infections and even lost their vision as a result of cosmetic contact lens use.

If you wish to wow your friends with costume contacts:

1. 1. 1. Get properly fitted for the contacts by an Eyecare professional.

      2. Always practice good hygiene when handling contact lenses

      3. Do Not wear contacts overnight

      4. Do Not use someone else’s contact lenses

      5. If you experience redness, pain, blurry vision, excessive discharge, or swelling remove the contact lenses immediately and seek medical attention.
