If you have dry eyes (most people in Utah do), you may have heard of serum tears. Serum tears are a relatively new treatment for dry eyes. Some of our happiest dry eye patients are those on serum tears.
Serum tears is an eye drop for dry eye treatment that is produced from the serum in your blood. The serum is the yellowish part of your blood and it has healing and anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation and healing are important issues when your eyes are dry. Also since they are made from your own blood you are less likely to have an allergic reaction to them.
Serum tears are produced by first drawing your blood. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the serum from the red blood cells. Fluids are then mixed in with the serum in order to create the drops.
From one blood draw numerous bottles of serum tears are created which generally will last about 6 months. The serum drops are typically used 2-3 times per day as directed by your eye physician.
Serum tears have been one of the most successful treatments for dry eyes. We now have numerous patients who swear by these serum tears and have found them to be the only treatment that truly works for them. They do often work when no other treatment has in the past.
