At Davis Vision we understand that our patients are active in sports as we see several eye injuries each year that could be prevented.  Nationwide, more than 31,000 people a year suffer eye injuries. That number doesn’t have to be that high as almost all sports-related eye injuries can be prevented. Whatever your game, whatever your age, you need to protect your eyes! Take the following steps to avoid sports eye injuries:

  1. Wear proper safety goggles (lensed polycarbonate protectors) for racquet sports or basketball.
  2. In order to be assured that your eyes are protected, it is important that any eye guard or sports protective eyewear are labeled as ASTM F803 approved. This eyewear is performance tested to give you the highest levels of protection.
  3. Use batting helmets with polycarbonate face shields for youth baseball. Use helmets and face shields approved by the U.S. Amateur Hockey Association when playing hockey.
  4. Know that regular glasses don’t provide enough protection.

If you have any questions about recommended eye safety precautions, please call our office.  Preventing eye injuries is a lot easier than treating them!  We wish everyone a safe and fun fall sports season.
